In recent decades, the world of office communication has experienced many revolutions. From letters to faxes, from faxes to emails… With 2020 we have entered the era of smartworking - a transition accelerated by the pandemic - therefore having a digitized communication system is increasingly important for companies. Onys, active in the sector of digital solutions for companies and individuals for over 50 years, has experienced these evolutions closely while remaining at the forefront. Leader of the sector in Ticino, since 2017 it has expanded its services by taking over Canon Ticino, of which it has assumed the distribution, sales and assistance rights. 2021 will mark another important step: Mauro Cavargna will leave the reins to the co-founding partner Walter Kaufmann, to Renato Lucioli and to his son Danilo Cavargna, accompanied by Fabio Lerose (sales manager). Danilo Cavargna and Walter Kaufmann tell us about the history of the company ...

The company was founded 55 years ago as Copynorma, a small Lugano company, and then became the Ticino branch of Messerli. 20 years ago Mauro Cavargna, Walter Kaufman and Renato Lucioli created the current Onys, taking over the Ticino branch of Océ Schweiz. «In 2017 we took over the Canon branch in Ticino, strengthening our role as a reference company in the Ticino market at the service of the customer - with more than 20 collaborators, consultants and specialized technicians. We respond to specific business needs by finding effective and professional solutions in the field of printing and digitization ».

What have been the turning points in the last 20 years that have changed communication and workflow in the office?

“A big change came in early 2000, when we were able to market color printers on a large scale. Another important step, which took place in the same period, was the one that led from the analogue to the digital copier, now called “multifunction”. A revolution that allowed printing, copying, scanning and electronic sending to be condensed into a single machine - which has since become an indispensable tool for the office ».

Your company was born to offer paper-related services, how do you see the future of paper printing with the unstoppable advent of digital?

«We must keep up with the times and not fossilize on consolidated ideas and habits. The means of communication today are varied and one does not exclude the other. The solution is to open up to new ways - integrating innovations such as Enterprise Content Management or the interactive screens of Digital Signage - and at the same time always bearing in mind that printing will never die. If in some countries, such as the Scandinavian ones, digitization and smartworking have been practices that have been present for some time, Ticino has a dimension that is still strongly linked to habits and fond of paper. Our role today is precisely to offer a bridge between paper and digital by facilitating the coexistence of these two realities and the transition from one to the other through interfaces and consulting services. Today the flow of documents within a company must be digitized in a secure, quick and simple way, just think of a paper invoice that must be registered and accounted for. This allows you to maintain a methodical control of the flow of information and secure archiving of your documents ».

The smartworking revolution leads to a further step towards the digitalization of the workflow ...

«Companies are machines that create information: the challenge is to keep them organized. Today we are moving towards the digitization of documents, reducing paper. The future, confirmed by the current trend of smartworking, is called Enterprise Content Management. A type of software that allows you to centralize and regulate the flow of contents of companies, both small and large. The ECM electronically organizes the flow of documents by digitizing them and making them usable within business processes.
In addition to being highly adaptable to the needs of each company, it is not necessary to revolutionize the entire work system at once: you can start from one area and then decide later whether to extend the use of the software to other parts of the document flow. In a rapidly evolving world, the role of companies is to remain open to change, flexible and curious ».
