Dr. Matteo Malacco, we often hear that the sun is good for us. But is it true and what are, in general, the effects of prolonged exposure to its rays?
«Contrary to what we usually believe in the West, tanning, often considered a sign of beauty, is actually a defense mechanism of the skin against damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. These rays penetrate the skin, causing an increase in the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of skin, hair and hair. After a few days of exposure to the sun, the most exposed areas begin to darken: it is an attempt by the skin to protect cells from the damage of UV radiation. However, when exposure is intense and prolonged, tanning is not enough to protect us. These radiations can be very dangerous for the skin, causing damage to collagen and skin tissues. This can lead to sunburn, premature aging and the appearance of wrinkles. For this reason, it is essential to protect yourself during long exposures to the summer sun, using products that screen UV rays. It should be noted, however, that sunscreens also reduce the synthesis of vitamin D. Prolonged exposure to sun, wind and salt during the summer can therefore have significant effects not only on the health of the skin, but also on the hair and the body in general.
Prolonged exposure can cause serious damage to the skin. What are the main risks it faces?
"While UVB rays stop on the surface of the skin causing redness, sunburn and sunburn, UVA rays penetrate to the dermis and, over time, can contribute to premature skin aging. These rays damage collagen and elastin fibers, which are responsible for the skin's tone, elasticity and firmness, and increase the production of free radicals, to the detriment of antioxidant substances. The increase in free radicals, and especially their accumulation at the intracellular level, can hinder normal cellular functions and, over time, cause the appearance of the first wrinkles, hyperchromic spots and dehydration of the skin."
For many, returning to the city means the need to intervene to repair the summer damage done to their skin. What are the most effective solutions proposed by regenerative aesthetic medicine?
«Regenerative aesthetic medicine has established itself as an innovative and promising discipline in the treatment of aged or damaged skin, proposing techniques that stimulate the natural processes of skin repair and regeneration. In particular, a widely used technique is Growth Factor Therapy, which uses growth factors derived from platelets (PRP) or stem cells to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. PRP is obtained by taking a blood sample from the patient, from which platelets are extracted and then injected into the skin to promote cell regeneration. Another effective technique is Microneedling, which uses a device equipped with thin needles to create micro-perforations in the skin, thus stimulating the production of collagen and promoting the absorption of active substances applied to the skin surface, improving the texture and elasticity of the skin. There are also chemical peels that consist of applying chemical substances to the skin to remove the upper layers. This process promotes cell regeneration and improves brightness, reducing blemishes and wrinkles. These peels can vary in intensity (light, medium or deep) depending on the patient's needs. And, again, laser therapy that uses different wavelengths to treat aging skin. Ablative lasers remove the superficial layers of the skin, while non-ablative lasers stimulate collagen production without damaging the skin's surface, improving texture, wrinkles and sun spots.
What other skincare treatments are offered at The Longevity Suite??
"Dermal fillers based on hyaluronic acid or other biocompatible substances are used to restore the volume and fullness of the skin, filling wrinkles and fine lines to improve the overall appearance of the face. Intense pulsed light is another effective technology, which uses pulses of light to treat various skin blemishes, such as spots, rosacea and wrinkles, stimulating collagen production and improving skin texture. Finally, Biostimulation, which involves the injection of biocompatible substances such as hyaluronic acid or amino acids, helps regenerate the skin, restoring hydration and skin tone."
Finally, what advice would you give to women and men to maintain smooth, soft and well-hydrated skin all year round?
"The best results are obtained by adopting a combined approach of different techniques, so as to address various aspects of skin aging, maximizing the results. In any case, it is essential to consider the importance of a healthy lifestyle and a correct skin care routine. Balanced nutrition, adequate hydration and sun protection are essential to maintain healthy skin and reduce the signs of aging. Regenerative aesthetic medicine techniques offer personalized solutions for the treatment of aging skin and are proving to be increasingly indispensable for obtaining younger, healthier and brighter skin."
