The Club was founded in the 20s on the model of a traditional English golf club at the behest of the legendary British golf pro Tom Williamson who designed the course in 1929. From its origins to the present day, the Golf & Country Club Zürich remains a private club where members do not have to book tee times to play. In addition, the clubhouse, designed in the 1930s in the Bauhaus style, is exclusively at their disposal. Aside from a few adjustments made in 1936 by British golf course designers Simpson & Co., the course, which is 685 meters above sea level, remained virtually unchanged until it was redesigned in 1978-79 by the well-known architect of golf Donald Harradine. Reopened in May 1980, the route has therefore stood the test of time for another 35 years. In fact, from 2015 to 2018, it was completely redesigned for the third time: the well-known golf course architect Thomas Himmel designed the new course focusing attention on correct positioning and a thoughtful approach to the greens. The removal of the originally steeply sloping fairways has greatly increased the balance of the course which has an overall length of 6564 meters.
In addition to the 18-hole golf course, the Golf & Country Club Zürich includes a full range of facilities, including a large short play area, including practice bunkers, a large putting green, caddy master and a well-stocked shop with a large range of objects and tools for amateurs and professionals.
The club house of the Zurich Golf & Country Club was built in 1929 by the Zurich architects Henauer & Witschi. Inspired by a modern style, the complex is characterized by the careful proportioning of the different parts of the building, with openings that create an interaction with the rustic and elegant setting inside, inspired by Anglo-Saxon but also Alpine examples.
In September 2020, the Zurich Golf & Country Club hosted the European Amateur Championship, organized by the European Golf Association (EGA) in full compliance with all anti-Covid-19 safety regulations. The competition, which is held in rotation on the most prestigious greens of the continent, saw the participation of athletes from countries all over Europe, giving life to a sporting spectacle of high interest, in a landscape of great charm.
