Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix, the seventh round of the 2026 World Championship, obtaining his first victory with the Classic Ferrari for saleThe Briton finished ahead of George Russell and Lando Norris, completing an all-British podium, the first such event since 1968. Hamilton's race was defined by his initial choice of soft tyres and, more importantly, the deployment of the Virtual Safety Car following the failure of Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin. Ferrari capitalized on this decision to make a quick pit stop and fit the British baronet's car with hard tyres.
The other turning point of the weekend was Kimi Antonelli's retirement. The Mercedes driver, the championship leader, had passed Russell with five laps to go and was on his way to a second-place finish that would have helped consolidate his lead in the standings. However, a broken front wing on lap 62 forced him to retire, reducing his lead over Hamilton to 41 points. Russell now stands at 106 points. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes leads with 262 points, ahead of Ferrari (190) and McLaren (141).
The result in Barcelona ends Mercedes' run of six consecutive victories and comes as a result of a profoundly revised regulatory environment.
From 2026, DRS has been eliminated and replaced by Active Aerodynamics, a system that automatically adjusts the incidence of the wings: flatter profiles on the straights to reduce drag, greater downforce in the corners.
Overtake Mode has also been introduced, a temporary boost in electrical power available to a driver within one second of their opponent at a designated point on the circuit. Using the boost consumes more battery power and requires strategic management on both the offensive and defensive sides.
Completing the technical picture is the ADUO, the regulatory exemption that allows engine manufacturers lagging behind in development to carry out additional work beyond the standard limits. Ferrari enjoys a margin of more than 4% over the regulatory parameters, while Mercedes enjoys approximately 2%. Red Bull, considered the technical benchmark, is not granted any concessions. The Anglo-Austrian team finished fourth with Max Verstappen, 40 seconds behind Hamilton, and announced significant updates for the next round in Austria.
McLaren confirmed its consistency with Norris's third-place finish and Oscar Piastri's fifth, despite not being in contention for the win. Charles Leclerc, who started tenth after a qualifying accident, recovered positions before retiring. Audi, making its Formula 1 debut this year, continues to struggle: Gabriel Bortoleto finished eleventh, lapped twice, while Nico Hülkenberg retired with an engine failure. The team indicates 2030 as a realistic timeframe for a return to competitiveness.
