Il Lugano Golf Club continues to be a point of reference for cantonal sport, winning, for the second consecutive year, the Ticino Absolute Championships, held on Sunday 3 May at the Golf Club Patriziale Ascona.
The competition—one of the most important events in the Ticino golf calendar—saw the Lugano team finish with a total of 635 shots, six points ahead of the home team. Golf Gerre Losone trailed further behind, finishing third with 676 shots.
High-level challenge in Ascona
The Ascona greens witnessed a hard-fought match, characterized by challenging technical conditions and a generally good level of play. Golf Club Lugano successfully handled the pressure, demonstrating solidity and consistency, qualities that made the difference in the direct confrontation with their rivals.
The team performance reaffirmed the depth of the Lugano squad, capable of achieving competitive results in all categories.
Protagonists in the individual rankings
On the individual level, Geraldine Dondit of Golf Club Patriziale Ascona won the Ladies' category. The former tennis player completed the 18 holes with a score of 70, a result under par that secured her the title of Ticino Absolute Champion. Veronica Capella, also from the organizing club, finished second, while Vera Hörning of Golf Gerre Losone took third place.
In the Amateur category, defending champion John Bürki of Golf Club Lugano maintained his lead. With a round of 68, three under par, Bürki outdistanced Adriano Rossi (Golf Gerre Losone), who was second with 75. Davide Iannotta, representing the Lugano club, completed the podium with 78.
Clear rankings and Lugano dominance
Golf Club Lugano also made its mark in the net rankings. Among the ladies, Sara Romani took first place with a 68, while Johanna Jelmini finished third with a 71.
Complete domination in the Amateur category, with an entirely Lugano podium: Nicola Zappa won with 69 shots, followed by the young Julian Crivelli (71 shots) and Christian Cavadini (72 shots).
The Magliaso club also stood out in the Senior category thanks to the success of Emilio Lombardo, who finished first with 72 shots.
A tradition spanning over a century
Founded in 1923 as a 9-hole course along the Magliasina River, the Lugano Golf Club was expanded to 18 holes in 1969 based on a design by architect Donald Harradine. Today, it represents a unique golfing experience: it covers an area of approximately 32 hectares, smaller than usual, yet maintains a high technical standard.
Nestled within the urban context of Magliaso, the course is considered a green oasis and continues to play a central role in promoting golf at the regional level.
