There is no need to look for striking differences in the design of this four-wheeled icon: the Mercedes-AMG G 63, the Geländewagen, remains totally true to itself even with this slight restyling, retaining “under the skin” all the innovations and updates that allow it to add further potential to the already vast array of capabilities and technologies. Pure 4×4 but, over time, made almost equally exciting to drive even on curves, the G-Class aesthetically relies only on slight details, with the most obvious given by the retouched front grille.
At the same time, the bumpers have been redesigned, while a new spoiler profile on the edge of the roof combines with more effective insulating materials for the cladding of the pillars and internal panels to ensure more refined aerodynamics and increased soundproofing quality.
At the top of the range remain the unmistakable dynamic qualities of the AMG 63, still entrusted to the solid 4,4-liter biturbo V-eight. However, this unit has been enriched with the 48V mild hybrid system: the already appreciated performance is supported by the new integrated starter generator (ISG), capable of providing an additional boost of 15 kW (20 hp) with 200 Nm of torque for a short time. Reducing consumption but not only.
The transmission is entrusted to the very rapid Speedshift TCT nine-speed automatic transmission, with the combination of these solutions that has thus allowed to "shave off" a tenth in the same sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h, already exuberant in itself with the time of just over four seconds. There is also the special Performance Pack that allows a further, small improvement of this figure, in addition to raising the maximum speed of the vehicle. No less important, in the evolution of the G 63 AMG, is then the possibility of adopting the new Active Ride Control suspension system, which brings to the forefront the active hydraulic stabilization of the roll. This allows to keep the body of the vehicle level between the curves, offering greater stability, more precision and lateral grip as well as superior comfort for the passengers. The set-up is also adjustable at will, as well as able to automatically adapt to the various stresses induced by the road surface.
In addition to the propensity for more performance-oriented driving, the vocation for tough off-roading has not been neglected. The same, new suspensions allow for a further improvement in their maximum travel, while the optional Offroad Pro package adds further potential in the most impervious passages. The four-wheel drive also retains the option of low gears as well as three individually lockable differentials.
On board, the driver can have a series of additional information even when driving off-road, including the “transparent bonnet” view that projects the virtual view under the front of the vehicle on the central display, to better assess both obstacles and crests, slopes and depressions if they are no longer visible through the windscreen, due to the inclination of the car. This and much more thanks to the adoption of the latest-generation MBUX infotainment system, which also includes navigation with augmented reality. The interiors are naturally luxurious and meticulously designed; the Superior Line package then adds further nappa leather finishes, specific design elements, active multi-contour seats with Energizing Plus package including massage and climate control.
