On the occasion of the European Sustainable Mobility Week, from 16 to 22 September 2023, the City of Lugano distributes the new map of cycle routes in Lugano and the Lugano area. With the motto "Take your bike and go!", the map invites townspeople and citizens to prefer active and sustainable transport: because cycling is not only a way to combat traffic and air pollution, but it is also a good for health.
The cycle routes of Lugano and the Lugano area
Today Lugano has 39 km of cycling routes and a nice development potential for slow mobility. The short distances between the city's main points of interest make cycling competitive with vehicles, especially in the centre. Even the Lugano area, covering 300 km², can be entirely explored by bicycle. From Rivera, in less than two hours you can reach Riva San Vitale passing through the beautiful coast of Morcote.
Over the next week, which coincides with the European Sustainable Mobility Week (16-22 September 2023), all the inhabitants of Lugano will receive in their letterboxes a paper map showing the city's cycle routes on one side, and those of the city on the other. of the Lugano area, with the main routes and related travel times. In addition to the already existing routes, such as the Via del Lago which crosses seven neighborhoods and passes two others, some routes under construction are visible on the map, such as the Sonvico-Ponte Spada-Cagiallo and, in the future, the Lugano-Paradiso- Melide. However, other planned routes have not yet appeared, such as the track to the Tassino Park and the Raggio verde route along the left bank of the renatured Cassarate.
Accompanying Measures
Promoting the use of cycling also means implementing a series of accompanying measures. Among the most appreciated initiatives, Bikesharing must certainly be mentioned, a rental service that offers the 24-hour possibility of borrowing a bicycle, mechanical or electric, at one station and returning it at another (today the PubliBike stations there are 24 in the Lugano area and 69 in Sottoceneri, for a total of 116 bikes, half of which are electric). But in recent years the Bikecoin program has also been launched in Lugano, which promotes the use of bicycles for home-work travel with incentives, and numerous bicycle racks have been introduced, both in public and private places.
Active and sustainable mobility
By sending the new map of cycle routes in Lugano and the Lugano area to all the fires, the City is giving a clear signal in favor of active and sustainable mobility. In addition to walking, cycling is the best-known form of active mobility, which allows you to combat sedentary lifestyle and improve your health and quality of life. The map is managed by the Planning, Environment and Mobility Division and the Communication and Institutional Relations Division in collaboration with the Lugano Regional Transport Commission (CRTL), which makes it available to the municipalities in the region that wish it. The map is also available in the various Puntocittà of Lugano. The graphic design is by Studio Niki Paltenghi.
