The city of Varese is moving toward a new era of mobility thanks to its future vertiport, an innovative project aimed at improving connections with neighboring areas, particularly the Canton of Ticino . Through discussions with various organizations and entities, Varese is planning the introduction of a new airborne mobility system, which will complement existing rail and wheel mobility, also integrating the vertical dimension.
A vertiport for Varese: faster connections with Ticino
At the center of this ambitious project is the development of a vertiport, a zero-emission infrastructure, which will make it possible to strengthen connections between Malpensa airport, Ticino and the Milan metropolitan area. The vertiport will be an intermediate station for drone taxis, intended for the transport of people and goods, and will pave the way for a new mode of rapid and sustainable travel.
The area designated for the vertiport has been strategically located near the recently renovated Varese railway station. This logistical choice will not only facilitate access to the vertiport, but will also complement the city's mobility offering, integrating new technological developments with existing infrastructure.
Strategic collaborations and urban redevelopment
The vertiport project is the result of a memorandum of understanding signed between the Municipality of Varese and FS Sistemi Urbani (FS Italiane Group). The area identified for the construction of the new hub includes a parking area adjacent to the station, which will be transformed into a multi-storey car park and will see the redevelopment of areas no longer functional to railway operations. This intervention will not only improve the accessibility and mobility of the city, but also represents a significant step towards urban regeneration and sustainability.
