An immersive experience in the most authentic nature of Ticino, in the name of sustainability and well-being: this is the proposal of Monte Generoso, one of the most evocative places in the region, which stars Michelle Hunziker. The famous presenter and ambassador of Switzerland Tourism since 2021 recently visited the panoramic peak, announcing the obtaining of the prestigious "Swisstainable level III" label by the Monte Generoso Railway and the innovative Promo 2×1 offer, which allows two people to travel for the price of one on the famous rack railway.

360° emotion

Michelle Hunziker, with her unmistakable enthusiasm, is ready to tell Italian guests about the ease with which one of the most fascinating peaks in Ticino can be reached. “This mountain represents a bit of my identity, always balanced between the two countries,” jokes Michelle, who defines herself as Swiss in her DNA and Italian in her heart. Monte Generoso, located between the Val d'Intelvi and the Valle di Muggio, is a perfect example of sustainable tourism, a theme dear to the presenter.

From the village of Capolago, a few kilometers from Mendrisio, the historic rack railway starts which has connected Lake Lugano to the mountains for over 130 years. “40 minutes of pure magic,” says Michelle, highlighting how the 9km route offers a transition from dense forest to rocky ridge, revealing breathtaking views. “You can even see the Madonnina of Milan!” jokes Michelle, describing how, on clear days, the view extends from the lake region to the Po Valley and the Alps.

Taste and tradition

At Fiore di Pietra, the iconic building designed by Mario Botta, visitors can delight their palates with local flavours. The à la carte and self-service restaurant offer dishes such as Zincarlin from the Muggio Valley, local cured meats and a selection of Ticino wines awarded by the Swiss Wine List Award. The choice of local ingredients reflects the commitment to sustainability, embodied by Switzerland Tourism's Swisstainable manifesto.

An example of this commitment is the Monte Generoso herbal tea, prepared with edelweiss and organic herbs grown on the mountain. “It's a refreshing brew that's good for nature,” says Michelle, as part of the proceeds are invested in sustainable projects. Even at the Bellavista grotto buffet, at the intermediate railway stop of the same name, local products are served such as craft beers and Bisbino gin, produced in Sagno.

Activities and sustainability

Monte Generoso offers numerous activities for the more dynamic visitors: mountain biking, paragliding, birdwatching, visits to the Bear's Cave and thematic routes such as the path of the planets and that of the Nevère. With 51 km of routes of various difficulty levels, there is something for everyone. Michelle, enthusiastic, confesses that she wants to try paragliding as soon as possible.

The Monte Generoso Railway, supported by Migros Cultural Percentage, recently obtained the prestigious "Swisstainable level III" label, a recognition that attests to its concrete commitment to protecting biodiversity and reducing waste. The railway is powered by 100% renewable energy and organizes trail cleaning days, involving visitors. The protection of flora and fauna is a priority, with the aim of preserving the natural habitat of species such as the Alpine Rosalia.
