How should the data on tourism trends in the Mendrisiotto region presented during the Assembly dedicated to the 2024 financial statements be interpreted?
Despite the complex international environment characterized by persistent geopolitical tensions, rising energy prices, and climate and economic instability, which has impacted consumer confidence and travel behavior, our destination has responded with resilience, focusing on quality, authenticity, and collaboration. 2024 overnight stays confirm a positive trend, continuing the previous year, and from a planning perspective, last year was marked by significant initiatives.
Specifically, what were the main initiatives undertaken?
«I am certainly pleased to recall the collaboration in the context of the continuous development of theDiffused Hotel of Monte Generoso; the search for solutions to develop a particularly important project for the Bellavista area, which involves the construction of a glamping facility; the strengthening of the "Swisstainable" program with the first "CSR" report; and, finally, the analysis and preparation of the dossier for the new cantonal framework credit for the trail network. 2024 also marked the first year of the three-year mandate that the City of Mendrisio renewed until the end of 2026 for the management of the Tremona Archaeological Park. In short, significant efforts have been made to improve accessibility, implement environmental projects in the parks, and promote "zero kilometer" products. The goal is to further establish the Mendrisiotto and Basso Ceresio region as an authentic, accessible, and sustainable destination, with particular attention to the development of innovative collaborative products.
Particular mention should be made of the interventions undertaken to improve the hiking network...
Indeed. A significant investment was undoubtedly made in restoring trails damaged by severe weather, which relied on cantonal and municipal funding. In 2024, 681 interventions were carried out to ensure the passability and safety of the regional hiking network. In 2025, thanks to the newly purchased excavator, the OTRMBC has planned to undertake major renovations to the structures and will improve the trails, making them safer and more enjoyable. Another goal for the current year is the renewal of the horizontal signage.
Digitalization, Artificial Intelligence, and the use of social media are now the foundation of your marketing and communications efforts...

Regarding digitalization, the OTR, as part of a cantonal project, participated in the revamping of the tourism database. This strategic initiative aims to improve the quality, consistency, and interoperability of digital information throughout Ticino. The tourism office's daily social media presence, particularly Facebook and Instagram, has also been a strong point, with steady growth in both followers and engagement.
And what new developments can be announced regarding the ever-present topic of sustainability?
«The Mendrisiotto and Basso Ceresio Regional Tourism Organization is the first tourist region in Ticino to be classified as a Level 1 Swisstainable Destination – Committed by the Swiss Tourism Federation. The strengths that have earned this recognition include our work to harmonize nature, culture, the local population, wine and gastronomy, sports and recreational activities, along with the promotion of the region's sustainable development with local partners. Being certified as a sustainable destination means, first and foremost, having achieved a goal that allows us to publicly showcase our commitment to sustainability. At the same time, it also represents a starting point and a responsibility that we intend to share with all our partners in the region, enabling us to further improve and present a tourist region that is increasingly attentive to the environment, local communities, and our distinctive heritage.
