A new five-star river cruise ship is set to strengthen Switzerland's presence in the European cruise industry. This is the project announced by Thurgau Travel, a company based in Weinfelden which presented the future MS Thurgau Avanti, a unit which will enter service in May 2027 along the Rhine and its tributaries.

The total investment amounts to approximately 29 million francs and represents a further step in the fleet renewal plan initiated by the group in recent years. Since 2022, the company has accelerated its development program with new construction and technological upgrades focused on both comfort and environmental sustainability.

According to CEO Daniel Pauli-Kaufmann, the new project aims to redefine the river cruise experience by combining contemporary design, advanced technology, and environmental awareness. The vessel will be primarily intended for itineraries on the Rhine, but mini-cruises to Alsace are already on sale, with prices starting from 340 francs per person.

An international project between Romania and the Netherlands

The construction of the MS Thurgau Avanti will involve several European countries. The hull will be built in Romania, at a shipyard located on the Danube, while the subsequent interior fittings will be completed in the Netherlands under the supervision of the TeamCo shipyard in Heusden.

The entire process will take approximately 17 months: including hull construction, transport, and interior finishing, the work will be completed in just under a year and a half before the maiden voyage scheduled for spring 2027.

Contemporary design and expanded spaces

The new vessel will measure 135 meters in length and will be able to accommodate up to 180 passengers in 90 cabins and suites.

The aesthetic will follow a modern style characterized by linear geometries, the use of Carrara marble, and high-end materials. The spaces have been designed to offer spacious and bright spaces, with a sober color palette and an elegant atmosphere.

In detail, the configuration will include:

  • 82 standard cabins;
  • 4 junior suites, two of which are accessible to people with reduced mobility;
  • 4 premium suites equipped with rain-effect shower.

The dining experience will also be spread across multiple levels, with three different restaurants and a private dining area integrated into the main salon. The upper deck will feature a jacuzzi, barbecue area, the "Avanti Garden," and a panoramic bar. A wellness area with sauna and massage room will complete the offerings.

Technology and sustainability at the heart of the project

One of the most significant aspects concerns the ship's environmental profile. Thurgau Travel aims to obtain the international Green Award certification in the Gold category for the MS Thurgau Avanti, which has already been awarded to the MS Thurgau Gold.

The vessel will be equipped with next-generation technological systems designed to reduce the environmental impact of river cruises. The lighting will be entirely LED, and a significant portion of the furnishings will be produced according to social sustainability and supply chain traceability criteria.

The company explained that almost half of the interior surfaces will be furnished with recycled or certified materials, favoring European suppliers and short-distance transport to limit emissions.

The group's sustainability strategy isn't limited to new construction, however. Thurgau Travel has long collaborated with the Swiss foundation Myclimate through the "Cause We Care" program, which allows travelers to voluntarily contribute to climate projects. The funds raised are then doubled by the company itself.

In 2024, the company also became the first Swiss river tour operator to publish an annual sustainability report.

A growing sector for Swiss tourism too

The river cruise market continues to show signs of expansion, driven primarily by European demand for slow travel and cultural itineraries. In this context, Swiss operators like Thurgau Travel are investing in more modern and environmentally conscious fleets, targeting a clientele that seeks high standards but also greater environmental responsibility.

Founded in 2001, the Thurgau-based company has rapidly grown to become one of Switzerland's leading operators specializing in international river cruises. Today, the group continues to develop new itineraries and less-traveled routes, leveraging its family-run structure and strong innovation.
