Contemporary culture is constantly evolving and the Association Fare Arte nel Nostro Tempo (NEL) with The future is open… is committed to exploring the challenges and uncertainties that characterize our present through a series of meetings and video artworks. This event aims to involve the public in deep reflections and awareness on crucial issues for the future.
As the philosopher Karl Popper stated, “The future is open. It depends on all of us, on what we and many other people do and will do today, tomorrow and the day after, which depends on our desires, hopes, fears, on how we see the world and on how we evaluate the possibilities of the future." This quote highlights the shared responsibility of shaping our destiny.

The event is made up of four appointments
- When the Creative Act is Designed by a Machine – 20 September 2023
- Where: LAC Lugano Art and Culture, Room 1
- Timetable: 18: 15
- Description: This meeting will explore the complex relationship between creativity and artificial intelligence, with musical performances created by artificial intelligence and played by violinist Enrico Dindo. Experts such as Roberto Badaracco, Deputy Mayor of the City of Lugano, and Luisa Lambertini, Rector of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), among others, will participate. The evening will be moderated by Giovanni Pellegri.
- Mismatches between Memory of the Past and Projections in the Present – 25 October 2023
- Where: LAC Lugano Art and Culture, Room 4
- Timetable: 18: 15
- Description: This evening will offer a video review that explores the concept of deep time and contemporaneity. The works presented reflect on our cultural and historical past, highlighting events that still influence our present and future. The evening will be curated by Giovanna Manzotti and followed by reflections by the philosopher Michele Amadò.
- When Writing is Created by a Machine – November 15, 2023
- Where: Auditorium of the University of Italian Switzerland
- Timetable: 18: 30
- Description: This event will examine the impact of automation on the creation of texts and its role in culture, the quality of information and the professional future of young people. Gabriele Beccaria, journalist of “La Stampa,” will present extracts from scientific videos, followed by a round table with experts in the sector. The evening is in collaboration with the University of Italian Switzerland (USI).
- What Time Erases and What Does Not Die – November 30, 2023
- Where: Lugano Cantonal Library
- Timetable: 18: 00
- Description: This final meeting will explore the role of art in communicating universal themes across time. A contribution by the artist Anselm Kiefer will be presented and the critical fortunes and misfortunes of two great Lombard artists will be discussed: Caravaggio and Giacomo Ceruti.
