The longest museum in the world (MuLM) now has its own app that allows you to create a personalized itinerary, based on your transport preferences (on foot, by bike or train) and on the days of the visit, to obtain information along the way, about stories and curiosities of the places crossed and the museums to visit from the Gotthard to Milan.
A way of traveling with a guide, which invites you to explore the cross-border territory in an interactive and fun way.
Starting with an old trunk found in the attic; the objects it keeps tell us a story of passion for travel and "slow" discovery of the places we visit. Within the app we will also find three new thematic itineraries developed by the Municipalities of Faido and Serravalle and the PRO San Gottardo Foundation. The app, available for Android and iOs, was created by the Macaco studio of Agno in collaboration with Elia Frapolli Consulting and Tourism. In the near future it will also be possible to find the new tourist prospectus dedicated to the MuLM from the project partners.
MuLM, the longest museum in the world
The longest museum in the worldo was born from the idea of creating an itinerary in the Insubric area, between Canton Ticino, Lombardy and Piedmont, capable of creating a cultural link between both Italian and Swiss territories. The partners involved in the project are the junctions through which the "longest museum in the world" passes. A journey hundreds of kilometers long in the world of transport, from bicycles to helicopters, but also to rediscover the values of Alpine and peasant material culture. A careful look at the importance that the waterways, the Alpine passes and the transport of stone, up to the railway tunnels, have played over the centuries in uniting the people of these lands. A journey enlivened by exhibits, itineraries and events created specifically for the MuLM to be lived and traveled in a "slow" way, to the rhythms of nature and culture.
Points of interest to visit
We start from the north, from the 2 meters above sea level where the National Museum of the Gotthard stands. One is fascinated by the tale of the history of the Alpine pass made up of period objects and documents, multimedia contents to explore, unique pieces such as the last diligence in service between Andermatt and Airolo and temporary exhibitions, such as the current one made up of amateur films dedicated to "The Sunday trip" by car of the twentieth century.
A faido discover the Energy-Nature-Belle Époque route thanks to GiocaFaido, starting from the station. While with the application of the project it is possible to discover on foot, immersed in nature and alpine culture, the historic cores of the Strada Alta.
A Giornico, the Ethnographic Museum of Leventina boasts a collection that ranges from popular religiosity to domestic economy, from crafts to transport, up to winter sports. The "On Ice" exhibition is dedicated to the latter and can be visited until October 2023.
Lo Swiss Rail Park in Biasca takes the visitor back to the epic story of the steam trains that crossed the Alps between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, giving new life to the historic FFS workshops in Biasca. Composed of three hamlets, Malvaglia, Ludiano and Semione, in the Municipality of Serravalle reside magical castles, churches, splendid mountains and villas with their rustic buildings. A place of adventure to experience on foot or by bicycle thanks to the tourist itineraries. Do not miss the special itinerary for the municipality of Serravalle, to discover the history of the buzza di Biasca, the castle of Ludiano and many other spectacular places.
The Bellinzonese and Upper Ticino OTR in collaboration with the guide Marcello Stivan proposes itineraries to be covered with folding bicycles, which can be carried on public transport as hand luggage when the ride becomes demanding. The routes lead to the discovery of the territory: from the top of the Gotthard to Bellinzona touching the partners involved in the project and are divided into different themes. We pass from the history of the Via delle genti, to the military fortifications, to naturalistic and landscape aspects and naturally also gastronomic proposals.
over the border, in Piedmont, the Val Grande National Park it houses the quarry of pink Candoglia marble with which the Duomo of Milan was built. A story told by the Marble and Granite Museum in Albo di Mergozzo and by the ancient Ornavasso quarry.
In Lombardy, in the seventeenth century there were over one hundred mills along the Olona river. Now, with the MuLM, the Municipality of Olgiate Olona organizes guided visits to the most significant places in the Olona Valley. The leitmotif of the paths is the element of water, the source of life and energy. Also in the province of Varese is the Agusta Museum. At Cascina Costa in Samarate, from planes to motorcycles, up to helicopters, the epic of engines and flight is told thanks to augmented reality.
Not far away, along the Ticino river, in the territory of Somma Lombardo, stands the Panperduto dam, an example of that world of canals and water management which, over the centuries, has seen the Po Valley become an increasingly fertile land. Today there are the Italian-Swiss Water Museum, located in the center of the island of Confurto, and the Garden of water games.
From the province of Varese to that of Como, to discover the Madonna del Ghisallo Cycling Museum in Magreglio. A temple for all pedal enthusiasts and now also a starting point for experiencing the area on the saddle of a bicycle (even electric).
Finally, here is the arrival at Milan. The National Museum of Science and Technology "Leonardo da Vinci" is enriched with an exhibition dedicated to public transport by rail for the local connection, both urban and long-distance, and on the construction of the Gotthard tunnel.
