Lugano's Palazzo dei Congressi celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2025 with a wide-ranging program of initiatives that, for months, transformed the historic building in Piazza Indipendenza into a hub for urban memory, cultural activity, and reflection on the city's future. This anniversary provided an opportunity to retrace not only the history of the conference center, inaugurated in 1975, but also that of the surrounding area, today the heart of Lugano's cultural and civic life.
An anniversary that tells the story of the city's identity
Opening the final press conference of the Jubilee Year, the Deputy Mayor Robert Badaracco He recalled that the Palazzo is "not just a building, but a symbolic place in our city," capable of encompassing half a century of dialogues, performances, conferences, and urban transformations. A function that, in the words of the Department of Culture, Sport, and Events, will continue to define Lugano's identity for years to come.
The celebratory program involved cultural institutions, professionals in the sector and the public, proposing a path that went from Free guided tours cured with GuideSI, Lugano region e LIS Frequencies, up to the urban art project “LVGA/XY – Astro Forest” artist Yuri Catania, created together with the citizens on the main facade of the Palace.
In Piazza Castello, an open-air exhibition retraced the long urban history of the area, from the Renaissance castle to the modern transformations, while the series Lugano historical pages has dedicated a new volume to the building's half-century of conference and cultural activities.
The Civic Philharmonic Concert: A Tribute to Memory
Among the most anticipated moments of the year, the concert of theDecember 8, 2025 of Civic Philharmonic of Lugano, hosted at the Palazzo dei Congressi, marked the symbolic conclusion of the celebrations. The ensemble directed by Franco Cesarini proposed a program entirely dedicated to the contemporary repertoire for wind orchestra, with pieces such as Winds of Hope – Overture Op. 64 by Cesarini himself, AnutaKà! by Federico Agnello and the Second Symphony Op. 44 by James Barnes. An event also conceived as a tribute to the inaugural concert of 1975, the notes of which were played at the opening.
Numbers, growth and new professions
During 2024, the Lugano Congress Centre hosted 18 conferences, for a total of approx 10.000 participants, with direct economic impacts estimated at around 10 million francs and over 16 million indirect consequences. The most affected sectors were the medical, economic, financial, and scientific sectors, concentrated primarily in the spring and autumn months.
The structure, which counts today dirty 11, 13 collaboratorsbeyond 400 events per year and more than 100.000 visitors, strengthens the city's congressional vocation thanks also to theAmbassador Program, launched in 2025 and aimed at influential professionals interested in promoting Lugano as a destination for national and international conferences.
The critical issues: spaces, logistics and dual vocation
Alongside the celebrations, the anniversary was an opportunity to analyze the critical issues facing the Lugano Congress Center. As highlighted by the Director of the Events and Congresses Division: Claudius Chiapparino, the building lives a double vocationA conference center on one side, a civic center on the other. A duality that isn't always compatible, especially when planning the venues and dates.
Among the main limitations:

spaces not modular enough to accommodate parallel sessions and large-scale exhibitions;

a single entrance and service infrastructures that make managing simultaneous events complex;

the availability of nearby hotel rooms is not always adequate to the demand for large conferences;

conference calendars scheduled 2–3 years in advance, often overlapping with local events.
The Campo Marzio Nord project: a vision for the future
To meet these needs, the Municipality is focusing on the project of Tourist and conference center – Campo Marzio Nord, scheduled for completion between 2035 and 2040. A larger, more flexible, modular structure, flanked by a large hotel, public green spaces, and residential buildings: an urban planning project that should boost the city's competitiveness as a conference venue and ease pressure on the historic Palazzo.
A legacy that looks forward
With the official conclusion of the celebrations, Lugano's Palazzo dei Congressi enters a new phase in its history. As the organizers emphasize, the fiftieth anniversary does not represent a point of arrival, but rather a symbolic step towards a future in which the city intends to further strengthen its position in the international conference scene.
