The stage of Lugano Arte e Cultura (LAC) comes alive with new life this month, presenting a rich array of shows spanning theater and music. The artistic director Claudio Autelli signs the exceptional debut of Demons, an unpublished work that celebrates the bicentenary of the death of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Relying on the rewriting of Fabrizio Sinisi, winner of the Testori Award for Literature and the ANCT National Association of Theater Critics Critics Award, Autelli traces a fresco of youth, exploring themes of hatred, adoration and the desire for social change.
The month continues with “CartaSìa,” a show for children at the Teatro Foce, presented by Drogheria Rebelot / BIBOteatro. The project, winner of the “Portraits on stage – Permanent Workshops” competition, combines the corporeal dimension and puppet theater to explore the theme of creativity and its relationship with our world.
The culminating event of the month is the acclaimed West Side Story (in the header photo), the number one American musical. Directed by Lonny Price, this show, known for the music of Leonard Bernstein and the choreography of Jerome Robbins, transports spectators to the streets and courtyards of the Upper West Side of the 1950s. A captivating love story, a coming-of-age drama, action, thriller and social study intertwine in a show that masterfully uses music, choreography and lyrics to create a timeless masterpiece.
Music merges with visual art when Camilla Sparksss performs at Villa Ciani on January 27th. With an improvised audiovisual performance on the theme of cyclicality, the Swiss-Canadian artist promises to transport the audience on a multi-sensory journey through endless grooves on vinyl, synthesizers and spoken words.
