Milan is preparing to welcome the 29th edition of miart, the international fair of modern and contemporary art organized by Fiera Milano. From 4 to 6 April 2025, with a VIP preview on 3 April, the spaces of Allianz MiCo will host 179 galleries from 31 countries and five continents, confirming the role of the event in the global trade fair panorama.
Next to the main section, established, two curated sections, Emergent and Portal, return as protagonists, exploring the avant-gardes of contemporary art through research projects and innovative proposals.
Emergent: New Perspectives on Contemporary Art
Dedicated to experimental practices, Emergent highlights the new generation of gallery owners and artists. Curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini, the section features 25 galleries, with a strong international presence and numerous first-time participations.
The focus is on research and innovation: immersive installations, site-specific works, performances and ephemeral works are combined with painting and photography. Projects on display include Ginny on Fredrick (London) with sculptures by Jack O'Brien, Franz Kaka (Toronto) with paintings by Jennifer Carvalho, and Lovay Fine Arts (Geneva) with an unpublished installation by Ligia Dias.
The use of technology and digital simulation emerges in the works of Nate Boyce, presented by Ilenia (London), while the dialogue between different media characterises the stands of Nicoletti and TINA (London), who reflect on conceptual liquidity through the works of Tarek Lakhrissi and Josefa Ntjam.
Portal: Crossing Borders and Disciplines
At its second edition, Portal, curated by Alessio Antoniolli, offers a selection of projects that challenge traditional categorizations of art. Inspired by the theme among friends, a tribute to Robert Rauschenberg and creative collaboration, the section brings together artists who explore the concept of multiplicity and interconnection.
The confrontation between past and present emerges in the works of Santiago Yahuarcani, leader of the Uitoto people in Peru, represented by Crisis (Lima), and in the research of Victor Fotso Nyie (P420, Bologna), who explores African vernacular cultures. Identity and collective memory are at the center of the projects of blaxTARLINES (APALAZZOGALLERY, Brescia) and Julianana Matsumura and Flavia Regaldo (Coletivo Amarelo, Lisbon), while Lucy Otter (Galleria Franco Noero, Turin) challenges the perception of reality with works that deconstruct the concept of authorship.
Among other proposals, Richard Saltoun Gallery (London, Rome, New York) explores the relationship between nature and contemporary aesthetics with the work of Gino Marotta, while Jonas Roßmeißl (Klemm's, Berlin) investigates the concepts of identity and the public sphere.
A dialogue between present and future
The Emergent and Portal sections confirm the role of myart as a platform for experimentation and research, offering a panorama of contemporary art that goes beyond traditional categories. On the one hand, attention to young creativity and innovative practices; on the other, a critical reflection on the history and multiplicity of artistic narratives.
