Thanks to the 17th chapter of a season that the Mendrisio Art Museum inaugurated 7 years ago, a new path is staged in the context of those winds that over time have led the Pessina house to be recognized as an exhibition space dedicated to photography.
With Body and Soul (Jazz Portraits), a project by Stefano Galli, Casa Pessina returns to the human figure with a specific form of portraiture: jazz musicians immortalized live. From William Gottlieb onwards, musical photography has taken on a very important role in the contemporary visual landscape. This was especially the case in the history of jazz music: portraits that have now become iconic (think of those of John Coltrane or Miles Davis) have allowed its protagonists to convey contents and ideas that today belong to our collective imagination.
The splendid 34 photographs on display (a choice among the thousands taken by Galli in recent years and taken on the occasion of festivals, reviews and concerts in our Canton and in the nearby Como province) testify to his great ability to seize the moment and transform the documentary act in an expressive form, with a remarkable elegance of taste and an extreme chromatic refinement.
