From August 30th to October 5th 2025 the PW Art Gallery of Fribourg hosts a new exhibition dedicated to Marco Lupi, one of the most coherent and recognizable Ticino painters on the contemporary scene. The exhibition, entitled Observation, sensitivity and memory, is a journey through small, medium, and large-format works created between 2018 and 2025, in which the dialogue between matter and memory becomes the common thread. The inauguration is scheduled for Saturday, August 30th at 16.00:XNUMX PM.
Born in Balerna in 1958, Lupi began his artistic journey at the CSIA in Lugano, and then independently developed a research that over time has been enriched by significant encounters. Among these, one with Carlo Gulminelli, a painter and friend, who supported his early steps. Collaborations with artists such as Raggenbass, Soldini, Pecoraro, Minala, Catania, Dabro, and Borghi also contributed to the definition of a personal language.
A layered and instinctive painting
Marco Lupi's canvases are constructed like silent diaries, capable of capturing memories, relationships, and inner experiences. His technique combines acrylic paint, collage, fabrics, sand, and recycled materials, creating dense, layered surfaces. The result is an instinctive, often evocative style that alternates bright and darker hues without necessarily reflecting the artist's state of mind. As Lupi himself explains, his figures represent "witnesses to human reality, which is changeable by nature."

A recognized path
With over 40 solo exhibitions and numerous group shows in Switzerland and abroad, Marco Lupi has established a constant presence in the art scene over the years. Collaborations with institutions and galleries such as Artrust (Melano, Venice, Monte Generoso), Gallery House in Zurich and the Harang Gallery In South Korea, he gave further international scope to his work. With the latter, he participated in important events such as UrbanBreak Seoul in 2024 and 2025.
His research has attracted the attention of critics and scholars, including Dalmazio Ambrosioni, Luigi Cavadini, Flaminio Gualdoni, Francesca Rovati, who in 2024 signed a critical text for the catalogue Works 2018–2024Rovati describes Lupi's artistic style as a rare ability to "intertwine past and present, emotion and memory, inviting the viewer to reflect on their own emotional experience."
A return to Fribourg
The exhibition at the PW Art Gallery, located in Boulevard de Pérolles 25, marks the artist's return to a region of Switzerland he knows and loves. The gallery's spacious, bright spaces allow the material dimension of his larger works to be showcased, offering French-speaking audiences a direct encounter with the intensity of his pictorial language.
