Who was Carlo Battaglini and why is his thought still alive and relevant?
«Carlo Battaglini (1812-1888) is a central figure in the XNUMXth century debate on social justice and human rights. His ideas continue to be of great relevance today. The ideal of freedom is the driving force of his thoughts and actions, an essential factor for the development of individuals and peoples; he maintained that “freedom comes before life”. Battaglini, a progressive and active not only in Swiss politics, played a significant role in the movement for the unification of Italy. In an era of turmoil and change, together with figures such as Franscini, Luvini-Perseghini, Pioda, he shaped the social, cultural and political landscape and with them was a point of reference for liberal action, sowing the seed of modern Ticino. His republican thought is very current: the defense of a secular state, of a just society, of the importance of individual responsibility, defending a Switzerland as an example of a free, inclusive, federal and neutral state. He emphasized the importance of ethics and morality in public affairs, stating: “Excellence of genius is not enough if it is not combined with exquisite morality, unquestionable and unsuspecting good faith. Nor should we compromise with morality. Woe to the people who entrust their destinies to impure men!”. These principles are still fundamental to promote and defend today».
Circolo Battaglini celebrates 60 years of life. Can we retrace the main stages of its history, from its foundation to today?
«On February 1, 1964, during the Constitutive Assembly held at the Caffè dei Commercianti, the Carlo Battaglini Liberal Cultural Club. Among the founding members, names such as Franco Masoni, Pino Bernasconi, Ugo Canonica, Cesco Manzoni, Mario Guglielmoni, Giuseppe Martinola, Gianfranco De Pietri, Stelio Molo, Renato Regli, Aldo Sandmeier, Adriano Soldini, G. Gaetano Tuor, Pierre Tanzi stand out. All prominent figures in the political, cultural and social panorama of our Canton.
The Circle has tried to keep up with the times, keeping alive the tradition of critical thinking about the events of society and the impact that these have on the individual and the community, remaining faithful to the principles of Battaglini, mentioned above. This has been done through conferences, debates and discussions on current issues of the time: crucial themes such as women's suffrage, territorial planning, relations between Switzerland and Europe, the history and values of radical liberal thought, social and geopolitical changes, up to the impact of new technologies and much more.
What do you think could be the role of a liberal cultural circle as Battaglini defines itself in the current political debate in Ticino?
"Battaglini's thought emphasizes that the fight for human rights and social justice must be a collective effort. In an era in which populism and divisive ideologies are gaining ground, Battaglini's inclusive and participatory vision is more relevant than ever. Circolo Battaglini must act as a catalyst for debate and innovation, promoting a culture of open dialogue and stimulating critical thinking."
What are the issues that you consider to be of particular importance for the political and cultural growth of the population and on which you intend to engage?
"It is absolutely essential to promote political culture and education as tools of emancipation, because only in this way can a country grow. In a context marked by growing disinformation, it is essential to encourage a critical and aware culture, providing new generations with the tools necessary to face contemporary challenges. The political and cultural growth of the population passes through education and awareness."
In an era where public opinion is formed on social media, how can we increase direct citizen participation?
"Battaglini was a modern man, open to progress and with visions for the future of the country. We must not be afraid to tackle disinformation, even that which circulates on social media. It is essential to use these tools not only to communicate, but also to engage people. We must promote initiatives that encourage dialogue and tone down aggressive and divisive tones. It is our duty to take up Battaglini's legacy and work tirelessly to implement the liberal principles of justice and humanity that he supported so much at the "cost of his life"". This year we have reached the 60th anniversary and it will be an opportunity to take up some of Battaglini's thoughts and we will do so by celebrating "together with him" on January 29, 2025.
