Il Swiss Federal Council has appointed a new head of two central national security structures: the Military Intelligence Service and the Army's Preventive Protection Service. The Ticino native will lead them. Stefano Trojani, currently deputy head of the same services, who will be promoted to the rank of brigadier.

The appointment is scheduled for June 1, 2026, marking a significant step in the chain of command for the Swiss Army's intelligence and prevention activities. The appointment was welcomed by the Department of Institutions of the Canton of Ticino, which underlines the value of the Ticino presence at the highest levels of the federal armed forces.

A profile related to crisis management

Born in 1967, Trojani brings with him a wide-ranging experience gained between the military and public administration. In 2021, in the midst of the health emergency linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, COVID-19, had assumed a leading operational role within the Ticino cantonal administration. As project manager, he was responsible for coordinating mass vaccination campaigns and the contact tracing system.

In that context, his contribution was crucial in organizing logistical and operational responses, in collaboration with the Military and Civil Protection Section. This experience solidified his profile as a specialist in managing complex and high-pressure situations.

Returning to the Army and the Path to Appointment

After his time in Ticino, Trojani rejoined the Swiss Army, taking on responsibility for projects related to the security of military training grounds. From there, he continued a career path that gradually led him to the top of military intelligence agencies, until the recent Federal Council decision.

His appointment comes in a context in which intelligence and prevention functions are taking on increasing importance, both domestically and within the framework of international security cooperation.

The Department of Institutions expressed its appreciation for this appointment, which strengthens the representation of Italian-speaking Switzerland at the senior levels of the armed forces.
