This morning, Palazzo Civico was the setting for the institutional meeting between the Lugano Town Hall, in its entirety, and the new Consul General of Italy in Lugano, Plenipotentiary Minister Uberto Vanni D'Archirafi. Accompanying the Italian diplomatic representative was Vice Consul Tiziana Giacometti.
The installation of Consul D'Archirafi, which took place last April 7, marks a new chapter in the Italian diplomatic representation in the region, succeeding Gabriele Meucci, currently Ambassador of Italy to Guatemala. The curriculum of Minister Plenipotentiary D'Archirafi includes a solid and varied experience in the diplomatic field, with previous prestigious positions as Consul General in Vancouver and London, Diplomatic Advisor to the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, and Ambassador to Portugal.
Today's meeting is part of a consolidated practice, testifying to the recognized importance of cultivating and deepening the synergy existing between Italy, the city of Lugano and the entire Canton of Ticino. This collaboration is manifested in many key sectors, ranging from the economy to culture, from education to research, up to the crucial area of tourism.
During the cordial meeting, several topics of bilateral interest were addressed. A significant focus was placed on cross-border cooperation, with the aim of intensifying exchanges in various sectors. A central point of the discussion concerned infrastructure and, in particular, the completion within the desired timeframe of the extension of AlpTransit south of Lugano, with its fundamental connection to the Italian railway network. This work was defined as a strategic priority for the future development of the two territories, inserted in an economic and social context characterized by rapid evolution and expansion.
The new Italian Consul in Lugano expressed his determination to continue the work of his predecessors, further strengthening the already solid and fruitful ties between Italy and the Canton of Ticino. Today's meeting represents a tangible sign of the mutual desire to continue to work closely together to address common challenges and seize future opportunities.
