Lugano Airport posted a positive financial result for the first half of 2026. The first six months of the year closed with an operating surplus of more than 200 francs, a significant improvement compared to the same period in 2025, when the balance sheet showed a deficit of nearly 100 francs.
The difference between the two years is therefore significant, although the data must be interpreted within the context of a management system characterized by marked seasonality. The early months of the year tend to be less favorable for airport activity, while the volume of movements increases as the spring and summer seasons approach.
For the airport's financials, the shift from a negative to a positive result is nonetheless significant. Total revenue for the first six months exceeded 7 million francs, remaining essentially in line with the budget. On the cost side, however, overall spending was slightly lower than expected. It is the combination of these two factors that led to the positive half-year result.
This data does not, of course, represent a definitive solution to the airport's financial issues, but it does indicate a more favorable management trend compared to the previous year.
The traffic curve follows the calendar
The traffic trend confirms a now consolidated characteristic of Lugano Airport's activity: the first quarter generally presents lower levels, while traffic tends to intensify starting in spring.
The turnaround was particularly noticeable between April and June. The growth in traffic coincided with the period of the year when the airport's activity peaked, also contributing to improved financial results.
Furthermore, the traffic mix continues to distinguish Lugano from other airports primarily characterized by scheduled commercial aviation. A significant portion of revenue comes from private and corporate flights used for professional reasons, particularly on medium-to-large aircraft.
This segment plays a significant role in the airport's economic structure and helps define its operating model. Therefore, it's not just the overall number of movements that determines financial performance: the type of flights, the characteristics of the aircraft, and the services associated with the various operations also play a role.
July brings the highest figure in recent years
Initial indications for the third quarter appear to confirm the positive trend. In July, Lugano Airport recorded nearly 2.500 total movements, the highest monthly figure since 2022.
The summer increase is particularly interesting because it follows a traditionally weaker first quarter and reinforces the hypothesis of a second half of the year characterized by sustained levels of activity.
However, this data should be interpreted with caution. A single month is not enough to define the performance of the entire financial year, and, especially in the airport sector, external factors can quickly impact results.
General air traffic data also shows growth in 2026. Statistics published by Assaeroporti show an overall increase in movements at Italian airports for July compared to the same month of the previous year.
In the case of Lugano, however, the comparison must be made taking into account the specific characteristics of the airport and the weight of general aviation, which makes a direct comparison with airports more oriented towards commercial traffic less meaningful.
Fuel remains a variable to follow
Alongside the favorable signs, there remain a series of factors that could influence developments in the coming months. Among these, fuel prices are particularly noteworthy.
For an airport facility, energy cost trends are a difficult variable to ignore. Even when traffic increases and revenues are positive, rising operating costs can reduce available margins.
The first-half results should therefore be viewed as a snapshot of a favorable phase, not as the conclusion of the journey toward greater economic sustainability. It will be the full-year results that will allow us to understand whether the improvement seen in 2026 will be structural.
In this sense, the nearly 2.500 movements recorded in July are an interesting signal, but data from the following months will provide more solid indications on the stability of the trend.
An airport seeking economic balance
The central issue for Lugano Airport therefore remains that of the balance between activities, costs and territorial function.
The airport isn't just considered a facility for air transport. For the City of Lugano, it also represents an infrastructure with an economic function, particularly for connections related to professional and business activities.
This is also the focus of the City Council's positive assessment following the publication of the half-yearly results. The administration's stated goal is to progressively consolidate the airport's economic sustainability, while maintaining its role within the regional system.
This is a prospect that requires balancing two distinct dimensions. On the one hand, there's the need to improve the financial statements and contain costs; on the other, there's the need to maintain a sufficient level of activity to justify the airport's presence and function.
The first half-year result suggests that, at least in the first six months of the year, this balance has produced a better outcome than in 2025.
The numbers tell of a phase of consolidation
Looking at the available data overall, 2026 therefore seems to have opened a different phase for Lugano Airport compared to the previous year.
The shift from a deficit of nearly 100 francs to a surplus of over 200 francs represents a gap of over 300 francs in the half-year result. This is compounded by revenues exceeding 7 million francs and costs below budget forecasts.
On the operational front, the signs from the summer are also encouraging. The July figure, with the highest monthly turnover since 2022, reinforces the view of growth in activity in the middle of the year.
However, it remains to be seen how much of this trend can be confirmed in the coming months and what the impact of external variables, starting with fuel costs, will be.
Lugano Airport thus enters the second half of 2026 with better results than twelve months earlier and with traffic that, at least in the summer, shows signs of activity. For airport management, the challenge now is to transform these results into a sufficiently stable trend to strengthen the facility's economic stability over time.
From this perspective, the positive first-half results represent, above all, an intermediate step: a result that improves the airport's position, but which will need to be verified in the coming months and in the annual financial statements.
