artificial intelligence and banks
Marco Müller, Head of ICT and Organization, First Vice President of BPS (SUISSE)

In the Swiss financial landscape, technological innovation has become a must to maintain a competitive advantage and ensure operational excellence. Banca Popolare di Sondrio (SUISSE), known as BPS (SUISSE), has positioned itself at the forefront of this transformation, successfully implementing a generative AI-based solution that is redefining internal document management and operational efficiency. This strategic move, which sees the concrete application of AI in banks, is destined to set a precedent in the industry.

At the heart of this transformation is the adoption of a sophisticated RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) model, made possible by the "Dell AI Factory with NVIDIA." This end-to-end platform has provided BPS (SUISSE) with the robust and scalable infrastructure needed to integrate AI into its daily operations, directly supporting its employees.

AI at the service of banking efficiency

The implementation of artificial intelligence is nothing new for BPS (SUISSE), which has long been exploring innovative solutions to streamline processes. The most pressing challenge concerned the General Secretariat, which handles over 10.000 inquiries annually, ranging from client creditworthiness to complex regulations. Traditionally, answering these questions required laborious, manual review of countless regulatory and contractual documents.

The GenAI solution introduced, based on Large Language Models (LLM), has revolutionized this scenario. It is now possible to extract and synthesize information directly from business documents, providing relevant and timely responses. The RAG model is crucial in this process, ensuring that the AI draws only on verified and constantly updated data, thus minimizing the risk of inaccuracies. One of the technical challenges overcome was optimizing the RAG model's computational load to ensure unprecedented efficiency.

Dell Technologies: The Strategic Partner for Innovation

The collaboration with Dell Technologies was crucial to the project's success. The "Dell AI Factory with NVIDIA" provided the necessary infrastructure foundation, proving to be a scalable and future-proof platform, with the option to integrate Dell PowerScale storage systems. The production environment currently uses Dell PowerEdge R760xa rack servers, equipped with dual NVIDIA L40S graphics, ensuring high-level performance. A distinctive aspect of this solution is the prevalent use of open source tools, customized and optimized by the bank's in-house team.

A key element, particularly relevant for the Swiss banking environment, was the ability to implement a completely internal and local solution. This allowed BPS (SUISSE) to fully comply with the stringent regulations and discretionary requirements of the Swiss banking sector, while maintaining full control over sensitive information.

Marco Müller, Head of ICT and Organization, First Vice President of BPS (SUISSE), emphasizes the initiative's transformative impact: "GenAI has become an essential tool in our daily operations. Adopting the RAG model has significantly improved management and internal communication, allowing our employees to focus on higher value-added activities and generating a tangible impact on the organization's overall productivity."

Müller concludes with a forward-looking vision: "We are convinced that this technology will be a cornerstone for further optimizing our internal processes. The synergy with Dell Technologies ensures excellent, timely, and results-oriented technical support. Our team of data scientists is already exploring new applications, in close collaboration with business departments, to accelerate innovation and generate tangible value for the entire bank."

The BPS (SUISSE) initiative demonstrates how artificial intelligence and banks can create winning synergies, charting a promising path for the future of the financial sector in Ticino and beyond.
